Is a School Librarian Necessary?

Oftentimes, when budget cuts in schools are made, the question comes up: is it necessary for the school to have a librarian? This post from In the Library with a Lead Pipe argues that not only are school librarians a necessity for educating students in information literacy, beyond the limits of what a teacher can accomplish, but that students who do not have access to a school librarian essentially become an disadvantaged population that does not have the adequate skills to navigate the information age. These disadvantaged students often have difficulty in other library settings as well since they aren’t provided with the foundations necessary to be able to navigate the library or even to ask the correct questions.
